Superbowl happened yesterday, and a long with it a fair few new film trailers and teasers for the big blockbusters coming this year.
One to watch out for is J.J.Abrams’ new film “Super8”. Also produced by Stephen Spielberg, the film looks like a great throwback to sci-fi adventure films of the 70s (Eg. Goonies/Close Encounters/E.T), and hopefully another step in the right direction of getting some blockbuster films out that are genuinely creative, fresh, and original.
What excites me the most is that this is a completely original concept. Yes it seems to be making homage to a lot of Spielberg’s early work (never a bad thing), but none of the story or characters are based on originally existing franchises.

My best eBay buy of last term was this amazing piece of Disney memorabilia-
A limited edition programme from Disney’s Fantasia, which accompanied the first run of the film in cinemas in 1940. Limited to 2000 copies, the 30-page programme takes you through each movement of the film, with colour artwork and written commentary of the music and animation. Equally cool is that the film’s original length is a whopping 2hours40mins, Which did badly to the point an 80 minute version was released in cinemas quickly after the premier. This programme is for the whole feature.
Michael Sporn Animation has scans of a copy, and you can have a flick through here.

Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere is a photography project by Chris Sisarich, taking a look at the landscapes of Egypt.
Great use of negative space and minimalist subject inclusion.

Bobby O’Herlihy has illustrated this poster for Trocadero’s Midnight Movie of January, Kill Bill Volume I.
The piece has a good print like effect reminiscent of old Japanese wood block efforts, with the vintage illustration feel of the 60s.

These beautifully detailed oil paintings by Sea Hyun Lee caught my attention. using the negative space as representation of water, and the redness of what would otherwise be a luscious green landscape creates a great contrast which seems both loud, but quite understated at the same time. Nice.

I resent that this post is going to make me look like I have a strange leg/foot/type fetish but so be it.

The Circular Project was created by typographer Stephen Banham and artist Christine Eid. Presented on the streets of Melbourne, the project features a series of custom made man hole covers that present stories and history from citizens of the town.
It’s a brilliantly put together piece with a nice variety of stories and creativity in how they’re presented. Would recommend a flick through here.

Hyperakt Studio created this great printed literature/infographics/brochure detailing the United Nations End Poverty 2015 campaign.
What works best for me is the simple visual hook of using people to build up the type headings on the page, is implemented both consistently and sparingly enough to the point where it actually lets the text do the talking rather than the idea. Good stuff.

Linsay Gravette has quite a mixture of design work and illustration work within her portfolio. The illustration work really stands out, especially these great looking birds.

Just finished watching through the end of Freaks and Geeks. I can safely say that it’s rocketed up my list of favourite TV shows, and I highly recommend it be checked out.
A brilliant slice of life high school dramedy-the show follows teenager Lindsay Weir and her little brother Sam.

The show’s starting point is Lindsay’s transition from her life as an academically proficient student, star mathlete, and proper young girl, with Millie as her like-minded best friend, to an Army-jacket-wearing teenager who hangs out with troubled slackers. Her relationships with her new friends, and the friction they cause with her parents and with her own self-image, form one central strand of the show; the other follows Sam and his group of geeky friends as they navigate a very different part of the social universe trying to fit in.

What works best about the show is its cast, which is perfect. Aside from the main cast including the likes of a young James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, the supporting cast features cameos from Leslie Mann, Jason Schwartzman and Ben Stiller. Not surprising when it turns out Judd Appatow was the show’s executive producer.
What also works to great effect is the fact the show is a period piece, and remains very true to the early 80s, with a killer soundtrack.
Many (the internet) say it’s a crime it was cancelled after only one season of 18 episodes, but in some ways it’s great that what’s left is of such high quality, with a high rewatchability factor.
I could go on for a while, so I’ll hold back… basically… it’s worth your time.

The Phonofone III is an elegant iPhone amplifier that has no electronic parts…

This clever device amplifiesthe volume emited from an iPhone internal speaker roughly 4x (approx. 60 decibels).

For something that has no parts it’s a quite expensive device totalling at $195CAD not including vast shipping expense to Europe.
